Goldmund Quartet wins Competition
On Sunday 8 July Goldmund Quartet won the String Quartet Prize and Quartet Commission Prize at the Melbourne International Chamber Music Competition. This success in Melbourne comes only a few weeks after the Goldmund Quartet won 2nd prize at the recent Wigmore Hall International String Quartet Competition in London.
The Quartet performed Brahms’ String Quartet No.2 to clinch first prize in the String Quartet Robert Salzer Foundation category. They followed this by winning a special award for the best performance of a commissioned piece for the competition by Holly Harrison.
To reach the final, in Round One they played Haydn’s String Quartet in G major, op 54 No.1, Sokolovich’s Commedia dell Arte III, and Rihm’s Quartet No.4. They followed this in Round Two with Harrison’s Balderdash and Ravel’s String Quartet.
Established in 1991 and staged every four years, the Melbourne International Chamber Music Competition is one of the most prestigious events of its kind. The competition is open to string quartets and piano trios of all nationalities whose members are under the age of 35.More information

Debut album with NAXOS
On their debut album the Goldmund Quartet presents three quartets by the „father of string quartet“ Joseph Haydn.
By recording the first, a middle one and the last string quartet by the composer, the quartet doesn’t only show the compositorial development of Haydn, but also their personal relationship towards the founder of this genre. „Intonation, articulation, phrasing, balance – you can hear all these elements, which define fine quartet playing, in Haydn’s music“, which is why the Goldmunds chose Haydn for their debut album. The Op.1/1 form 1757/58, consists of five movements, clearly evolved from the divertimento form of that time. Towards the fifth „Russian“ quartet Op.33 the ensemble has a special relationship. „It is the first piece that we played together as a quartet and it’s interesting to see – given our own development – how there are always new things to discover“. Of the two last quartets by Haydn, written 1799, the ‚boys of Goldmund‘ chose the no.1. „The individual voices become much more independent, comment to each other and start a lively dialogue“.
The album is released with Naxos.
